Asian Soccer Stars can learn from Muhammad Ali

Future Asian soccer stars can learn a thing or two about training from the great Muhammad Ali.

I have a massive poster with a quote in my gym, where I coach Sobha and other future Asian soccer stars. The quote comes from the legendary fighter and sportsman, Muhammad Ali:

Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion

This is the last sentence, and most important part of a longer quote in which he says: [Read more...]

Adopt the Forrest Gump winning attitude

Adopting the right attitude whilst dealing with the ups and downs of a future professional soccer career, can be the difference between success and failure.

It really can make or break your dream.

It has been found that a common trait shared by very successful soccer players is their overall-winning attitude.

In fact, most of the professional soccer clubs have a team of psychologists and therapists whose sole purpose is to monitor players’ mental state periodically. [Read more...]

Asian soccer star: whinge and lose!

I  have a strict “no whinging rule” when coaching youth soccer, especially future Asian soccer stars.

I don’t want to hear all the whinging and moaning from kids who aren’t willing to put in 100% effort into what they’re doing.

It may seem a hard rule, but when anyone, especially kids, get into the habit of whinging everyone is affected. And as we all know habits are hard to break, sometimes lasting into adulthood.

People act and behave like the people they are around at any particular time, and on the training ground and soccer pitch this really shows. You can call it peer pressure or anything else you want to, but the bottom line is when it’s negative, it’s no good for anyone. [Read more...]

I want to be an Asian soccer star now!

Kids who dream of becoming Asian soccer stars, like kids from any other community, are in danger of losing their dreams by living a life of ‘instant gratification’ or ‘I want it now’.

Living in a world where everything is available in an instant is a major factor in breeding a culture of laziness and lack of fitness.

Want proof? Go watch a Sunday youth league match.

So what’s happening? [Read more...]

Asian soccer star – is there a shortcut?

Is there a shortcut to achieving the dream of becoming an Asian soccer star?

This is a question i’m asked by many young Asian players and their parents. They don’t just ask about becoming a soccer star but an Asian soccer star, and that’s where the problems start… with the mindset.

Asian kids and their parents don’t have the winning mindset for sports that they have in other areas of life, especially in the areas of education and entrepreneurship.

Developing a winning mindset for soccer is the first step of the journey and we’ll cover exactly how to do that in future posts.

But firstly, lets define exactly what a shortcut is. The online dictionary defines a shortcut as ‘a more direct route than the customary one. A shorter or quicker way’. [Read more...]

Asian Soccer Star! How to make it?

Asian soccer stars of the future need to get serious and start with a reality check.

Over the past few weeks i’ve been in contact with a number of coaches and scouts, and the overwhelming message seems to be the same. I’m not just talking about Sunday league clubs, but championship and premier league clubs as well.

It seems that even in the 21st century our kids are dogged by a stereotypical image towards Asian soccer talent, and a lot of this is our own fault. Parents and kids just don’t have the belief that they can really make it  into professional soccer, and many talented players don’t even try. [Read more...]

Excuses… is there an excuse gene?

You can’t make excuses and play football. It’s as simple as that.

Forget about playing professional football, I see all sorts of excuses being made in junior sunday league games all the time. It got me thinking, maybe there’s an excuse gene!

During my time as a coach I’ve come across all sorts of excuses, and parents seem to be the worst culprits.

” I don’t have the time”

” I’m too tired to drive you to football”

” I don’t get any support from my spouse”

Well here’s a reality check. If you’re serious about your child playing football, it’s time to replace those “i can’t” thoughts with the “I can” thoughts. Only then will your kids have the “I can” attitude that is sorely missing in the Asian football talent pool. [Read more...]
