Can Asians play football? A question that seems to be answered in a typical stereotypical manner by coaches, from a grassroots right through to academy level. Let me give you a typical example close to home.

A talented and promising youngster in his early teens, my cousin as it happens, was signed to a Midlands-based Division One club academy. While at the academy he exceled to higher skill and fitness levels showing promise to follow a career as a professional footballer.

Then out of the blue a bombshell. His coach sat him down and gave him a big dose of reality; ” Son, you’re showing great promise… but, there’s no way you’re going to be able to play professional football.
